THE
STORY OF MATRIX COLLEGE OF COUNSELLING
AND PSYCHOTHERAPY
Matrix was founded (originally
Matrix Integrative Training) in October
of 2001 when its Director of training,
Dr Susie Jones, gathered together a team
of experienced trainers eager to offer
a high quality integrative training
for counsellors in East Anglia.
Matrix has since become
a thriving centre for the education
of individuals who wish to train and
qualify as integrative therapeutic counsellors.
At Matrix we have a strong vision of
facilitating excellence in counselling
through heightening knowledge, developing
skills, emphasising self-reflective
practice and promoting ethical and safe
standards.
Our students in their
agency placements are recognised for
their maturity, ethical practice and
skills. We offer a low cost counselling
service to the community of Norfolk
and Suffolk and many of our students
are able to use this facility to gain
their counselling experience.
Our
Integrative Approach
Integration is important
in Matrix and our teaching is grounded
in current research. We see integration
as the drawing together of theories
and concepts from the three main schools
of thought (Humanistic, Analytic and
Cognitive-behavioural). The purpose
of this is to make a synthesis of understanding
about the formation of the self. The
development of the student’s individual
philosophy becomes a constantly changing
and developing process that reflects
his own values, philosophy and relating
style. This becomes the ground that
informs the counsellor’s practice.
We consider the development of the self
in relationship with others as a continually
evolving intersubjective process and
therefore see that both tutors and students
can grow and learn from joint experience.
As tutors we aim to
create a fertile learning environment
where our students can therefore develop
a sound philosophy of theory and practice
that embraces concepts and perspectives
from different schools of psychotherapy,
within a rationale that is coherent
and congruent with the belief system
of the individual.
Doctoral
Research
Dr Susie Jones, The Director
of Training, has completed a doctoral
action research project in which students
and staff have been involved as participants.
This research involved the exploration
of function and dysfunction in organisational
dynamics.

the Matrix qualification has enabled
them to enter into the third year of
their five year training, through that
Institution’s Accreditation of

The
Matrix Tutoring Staff (more
info)
Matrix staff are very
approachable. Dr Susie Jones will always
be happy to take your call and assist
you. If she is otherwise engaged, she
will phone back at the earliest opportunity.
Many problems are ironed out quickly
and easily in this way. Counselling
training is a considerable personal
investment, in terms of time, effort
and money and we maintain a high respect
for the student’s commitment.
Summer
Barbecue

Every
year Matrix holds a summer barbeque
in the gardens of Stubbs Green. All
those involved within the organisation
as well as potential applicants can
relax and have fun together. This day
is also a chance to meet with colleagues
and interested colleagues in the counselling
field. This is a highly valued and important
part of the Matrix calendar for staff
and students.
